Trader Joe’s... will now open a two-level store in a tower under construction at Broadway and 72nd Street next year, according to a proposal submitted to the local community board
The company wrote back to me after I asked via email whether a store would open on 72nd. The news will disappoint Trader Joe’s lovers:
“We regret to inform you that at this time we have no confirmed plans for a store location in this area,” customer relations rep Nikki K. wrote. That “no confirmed plans” phrase seems to leave the door open for a possible opening sometime in the future — but not very wide.
“We are always looking for new locations and are open to suggestions and we appreciate the information you have provided,”
For months, Upper West Siders have been awaiting the arrival of a Trader Joe’s grocery store.... Now, it appears that the store may not open on the Upper West Side at all.
Said Tony, the store manager for TJ’s Union Square location: “There’s nothing confirmed about any other” store locations being added in Manhattan to supplement the existing 14th Street Trader Joe’s.
Asked about rumors that Trader Joe’s was actually going to set up shop on 100th Street near the river and not at the 72nd Street locale, Tony, who declined to provide his last name, said: “None of that is accurate. Nothing has been decided.”

The store has signed a lease for the retail space at the handsome Mattel Building at 675 Sixth Avenue, the storefront formerly occupied by Barnes & Noble, according to an industry source. Trader Joe's, as is its notoriously press-unfriendly wont, declined to comment for this story,
except to remind The Observer that Trader Joe's has another "confirmed" store opening on 72nd Street.
