The last time I saw any real mention was in the orignial article that sparked all the rumors

Trader Joe’s... will now open a two-level store in a tower under construction at Broadway and 72nd Street next year, according to a proposal submitted to the local community board

There was also a rumor a while ago that Trader Joe's was going to take over the old Metro Theater at 103rd and Broadway, but last I heard an Urban Outfitters had taken on the lease.

I miss the days when on a hot summer night you could stroll down Broadway and decide to catch whatever movie was playing at The Olympia. With the loss of the Olympia, the Edison, and the Metro all the spontaneity is lost; you now have to truck down to 84th street to catch a movie

A posting on Trader Joe's Fan dated June 22nd. 2009 under "2009 Store Openings" lists "New York, NY (Upper West Side)"

I wish Trader Joe's had looked a little further north, like in the 80s or even near Columbia University, The 90s or 100s would have been wonderful! The 70s already have Fairway and the 80s have Zabar's. Square footage requirements is a constraint, but a few locations such as Ariel West on 99th and Broadway (still unoccupied as of this writing) can be found. If the cramp Union Square location is any indication, Trader Joe's isn't looking for a lot of space.

Westside Independent writes
http://westsideindependent.com/2009/09/ ... uncertain/
The company wrote back to me after I asked via email whether a store would open on 72nd. The news will disappoint Trader Joe’s lovers:

“We regret to inform you that at this time we have no confirmed plans for a store location in this area,” customer relations rep Nikki K. wrote. That “no confirmed plans” phrase seems to leave the door open for a possible opening sometime in the future — but not very wide.

“We are always looking for new locations and are open to suggestions and we appreciate the information you have provided,”

and Food and Things writes,
http://www.foodandthings.com/2009/09/ne ... -in-doubt/
For months, Upper West Siders have been awaiting the arrival of a Trader Joe’s grocery store.... Now, it appears that the store may not open on the Upper West Side at all.

Said Tony, the store manager for TJ’s Union Square location: “There’s nothing confirmed about any other” store locations being added in Manhattan to supplement the existing 14th Street Trader Joe’s.

Asked about rumors that Trader Joe’s was actually going to set up shop on 100th Street near the river and not at the 72nd Street locale, Tony, who declined to provide his last name, said: “None of that is accurate. Nothing has been decided.”

Curbed.com points out that if you have a sharp eye, you'll catch a mock-up of "Trader Joe's" signage on the http://www.72andbway.com/

I just read there that Trader Joes is moving to Chelsea

http://www.observer.com/2009/real-estat ... xth-avenue

The store has signed a lease for the retail space at the handsome Mattel Building at 675 Sixth Avenue, the storefront formerly occupied by Barnes & Noble, according to an industry source. Trader Joe's, as is its notoriously press-unfriendly wont, declined to comment for this story,

AND

except to remind The Observer that Trader Joe's has another "confirmed" store opening on 72nd Street.

I was at the Union Square Trader Joe's and the cashier told me the store in the Upper West Side would open up this fall.
